"If you want to live a life you've never lived, you have to do things you've never done." - Jen Sincero
When I first moved to Calgary, I was desperate to connect with others. Working from home, being a foreigner in a new land, and not knowing anyone outside of my husband proved to be a much bigger challenge than I had anticipated. I tried friend dating through Bumble BFF, I attempted to connect with the ladies at fitness classes, and I awkwardly talked way too much to the person at the grocery store because it was the first human I had actual contact with in days. I was A MESS. Below is an entry from my journal that I wrote a few months after my move:
“I haven’t had much luck at making friends here. Each time I feel that I’ve met someone who could be a genuine connection, I don’t hear from them again. My heart aches for someone to talk to, to have lunch with, to visit outside of this apartment. I guess I’ve only been here for close to 3 months, but working from home and being limited to how I can meet people, it’s been very lonely.” November 2016
It wasn't until January 2017 that someone finally slid into my DMs and asked if I would want to hang out sometime. That was 6 months after I moved. The one thing that was consistent with all of my efforts was that I kept trying. I kept pushing myself out of my comfort zone and forced myself to be vulnerable. Was it easy? No. Did my friends back home understand? No. But as Jen Sincero mentions in her book "You Are A Badass," you have to do things you've never done before to change your life.
If you resonated with what I wrote in my journal nearly 3 years ago, I want to tell you right now - girl, you are not alone! Many of us are silently suffering from loneliness, but keeping a brave face for the outside world. I encourage you to check out our amazing upcoming events this month: Babes & Brews - Find Your Wing Woman is happening on July 16th, and Stress Less About Making Friends is happening on July 30th. Come out and gather with us for a couple of hours. You never know when you're going to find that person who can't wait to slide into your DMs. ;)
